The Process: A Play in Five Dubious Acts by Ian Robinson

The plight and treatment of asylum seekers has always been of real concern to Liberty Victoria. In 2012 and 2013 the continued detention of a number of refugees as a result of adverse security assessments from the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was a particular priority.

In an attempt to draw attention to this situation, Liberty Victoria called on the valuable talents and time of playwright, Ian Robinson, to facilitate the passage of The Process from its inception, through the writing process and on to the very successful rehearsed reading held at La Mama Theatre in July 2013.

Franz Kafka started his second novel, Der Process, in 1914, but it was left incomplete at his death in 1924 although he had written the final chapter. It was published posthumously in 1925 and is best known in the English-speaking world as The Trial. It has been observed that the plight of our refugees is similar to that of “K” in Kafka’s novel.

Ian Robinson's play reflected two successive governments, two successive immigration policies and one Tamil refugee caught in the middle.

You can listen to Ian describing the reasons behind the writing of the play here.

In February 2015, The Process was staged at La Mama, followed by a number of performances across Victoria and in Canberra.

From January 25th to January 29th 2017 at 7pm, this hour long play written by Ian Robinson, directed by John Gauci and produced by Natasha Brown will be performed at the Butterfly Club, a small theatre in Carson Place, off Little Collins Street.

The Process is a satire that dissects the impossibility of being deemed both a refugee and security risk and the toll of being human in the face of inhumanity.

The appalling treatment of asylum seekers continues and we hope you able to go along to see The Process and also let you family, friends and colleagues know about it by sharing this email and also liking / sharing the Process FaceBook page.
