Sam is a criminal defence solicitor who has acted in a wide range of criminal matters including cases with a particular focus on human rights. Sam has appeared on behalf of protesters charged with offences arising out of incidents such as the G20 ‘riots’, the Max Brenner protests as well as travelling to Nauru to successfully defend a group of men charged with damaging property after announcements were made that they would never be resettled in Australia. Sam is a partner at criminal defence firm Stary Norton Halphen and is a previous co-chair of the criminal law section of the Law Institute of Victoria.

Sam was elected Treasurer in November 2021 after serving in the role of Senior Vice President since 2019. Sam was re-elected as Senior Vice President in November 2023.
