Leadership change at Liberty Victoria

17 December 2008

AT its recent Annual General Meeting Liberty Victoria elected a new leadership team. Julian Burnside QC has stepped down after serving the customary two terms as President and is replaced by barrister and former Vice-President Michael Pearce SC.

Mr Pearce praised Julian Burnside for his unstinting work over many years for civil liberties and human rights. “It is hard to think of anyone who has done more in Australia to advance the cause of human rights over the last decade,” he said. “Liberty has been very fortunate to have the benefit of his leadership and wise counsel in the last two years. Fortunately he will not be lost to us as he remains ex officio Immediate Past President,” Mr Pearce added.

Jamie Gardiner, Anne O’Rourke and Prof Spencer Zifcak remain Vice-Presidents and Georgia King-Siem is a new Vice-President.
