Rapists and sex offenders could live unchecked in the community under radical law push by Victorian judges

Civil liberties organisation Liberty Victoria said there were “chronic problems” with the current registration regimen.

These included the rapidly expanding number of registrants, the absence of judicial discretion to leave people off the register and the complexity of reporting obligations.

“The register was originally intended to be a database of information on persons who posed a significant risk to the sexual safety of the community in order to prevent offending conduct (particularly against children),” Liberty Victoria argued.
