Description

Liberty Victoria has the pleasure of inviting you for a celebration of free speech. The annual Voltaire Award Dinner is a night of great conversation, food and music and a chance to get to know the people and support the work of Liberty Victoria, one of Australia's leading civil liberties organisations for 80 years.

The 2016 Liberty Victoria Voltaire Award Recipient is commentator, academic, lawyer, presenter, rock musician and now Gold Logie winner Waleed Aly.

Announcing the award at the end of April, Liberty President George Georgiou SC said: “There can be no doubting the clarity and the courage of Waleed Aly’s contributions to many areas crucial to public life in Australia. In a troubled and sometimes confused time he shines a sharp, unafraid light on subjects including terrorism and our treatment of refugees. The nation is better for his insights.”

Winner of the top journalism prize, the Walkley Award, for his columns, and a former AFL mascot, Waleed is a host of Network Ten’s The Project.

The 37-year-old is the author of an award-winning book and many literary short-listings. He has written for newspapers such as The Guardian, The Australian, The Sunday Times of India, The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Waleed is a lecturer in politics at Monash University, at its Global Terrorism Research Centre. He is the guitarist and main songwriter for Melbourne originals band Robot Child.

This year we are introducing the Empty Chair Award to be presented annually alongside the Voltaire award to a worthy recipient of the Voltaire who cannot attend the ceremony because of the consequences of free speech. This year the award will go to Raif Badawi who is serving a 10 year sentence for providing an online platform for political dissent.

Our MC on the night will be comedian, writer and performer Corinne Grant.
