Liberty Victoria calls on the University of Melbourne to drop its disciplinary processes against students who have engaged in protest on university campuses

Liberty Victoria calls on the University of Melbourne to drop its disciplinary processes against students who have engaged in protest on university campuses.

There is a long and proud history of students being at the forefront of movements that we now consider to be positive, including women’s suffrage and the anti-Vietnam war movement.

Students must be free to speak openly and protest in all circumstances where it does not cross the line of vilification or discrimination. Liberty Victoria especially rejects the premise that it is anti-Semitic to oppose Israel’s apparent war crimes in Gaza.

This case would set a troubling precedent that would have significant implications for freedom of speech on university campuses.

We call on Vice Chancellor Emma Johnston to take no further action against the students and to ensure that free speech is protected on university campuses.
