Asylum Seekers - Some FACTS
Asylum seekers are again the subject of much commentary and debate in Australia.
As per our Media Release in April 2009, Liberty continues to urge
the media and all politicians to take a measured, fair and humane
approach to asylum seekers.
It is important to look at the facts when considering Australia's
treatment of asylum seekers, often the FACTS are overlooked - the
proportion of asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat is small:
- Since 2001 it has never exceed 4%
- At its peak in 2001, it was less than 45%

LIBERTY supports the "Wear a Key for Refugees" Campaign - started by the South Australian Council for Civil Liberties.
We call on all concerned Australians who support refugees to refuse
to stay silent as their plight once again becomes a political instead
of a humanitarian issue and to "Wear a Key for Refugees".
