East West Street author Philippe Sands delivers this year's Alan Missen Oration, where he will explore the parallels between prominent Holocaust figure Hans Frank and Hersch Lauterpacht, one of his prosecutors. Sans will dissect the ideas of good and evil – and the music bridging both.
Philippe Sands QC is professor of international law at University College London, and a practising barrister at Matrix Chambers. He has been involved in many leading international cases, including acting for Australia in the whaling case against Japan at the International Court of Justice. He is the author of Lawless World (2005) and Torture Team (2008), has written several academic books on international law and is a contributor to the New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, the Financial Times and The Guardian. His new book, East West Street: On the Origins of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide, is part of a broader project that includes a film (My Nazi Legacy) and a performance piece (A Song of Good and Evil). He is vice president of the Hay Festival and a member of the board of English PEN and of the Tricycle Theatre.
The Alan Missen Oration is hosted by Melbourne Writers Festival with support of Liberty Victoria and The Alan Missen Foundation.
