Home - Liberty Victorian Council for Civil Liberties

Liberty Victoria is one of Australia’s leading human rights and civil liberties organisations.

We trace our history back to 1936 and have been campaigning for human rights for 70 years.

Liberty works to defend and extend human rights and freedoms in Victoria.

We believe in a society based on the democratic participation of all its members and the principles of justice, openness, the right to dissent and respect for diversity.

We aim to secure the equal rights of everyone (as long as the don’t infringe the rights and freedoms of others) and oppose any abuse or excessive power by the state against its people.

We have Policy Statements
Policy Statements on many issues, including Access to Justice, a Bill of Rights, Freedom of Speech, Privacy, and many other issues.

We aim to influence public debate and government policy on a range of human rights issues. We try to secure amendments to laws, or changes in policy, where civil liberties are not fully respected.

We prepare submissions to government, support court cases defending infringements of civil liberties, engage regularly in public debates, issue many media releases, and commentaries for the media, publications, and conduct many other activities.

Why you should join

The best way to get involved with Liberty’s campaigns is to join us. Liberty is a membership-based organisation, and relies on the support of thousands of individuals who want to protect and promote civil liberties and human rights.

As a Liberty member, you’ll be helping us to take the Government to task whenever they go too far. And you’ll be able to share in new ideas, high level debate and thought-provoking opinions that you simply wouldn’t find elsewhere. Most importantly, you’ll play your part in defending our basic rights and freedoms.
