Joint Submission on Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026 (Cth)

Liberty Victoria opposes the measures contained in the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026 (Cth).

This Bill – which has not been the subject of meaningful consultation or expert feedback – is unlikely to reduce the risk of future violence or hate. Instead, it proposes poorly-considered measures that will create further division and significantly limit civil liberties and human rights.

The horrific violence at Bondi calls for leadership that proposes solutions that we can trust to work, builds trust, reinforces our shared bonds, and resists harmful and racist rhetoric that damages communities – solutions which address the root causes of hatred. This legislation is not only harmful, but a missed opportunity to keep people safe.
