Liberty Victoria is honoured to announce that the winner of the 2026 Voltaire Human Rights Award is the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.
In November 2025, the first Statewide Treaty with First Peoples was signed into law in Victoria. This is one of the most defining moments in Australia’s history since invasion. Treaty creates a pathway for First Peoples’ ways of knowing, being and doing to shape outcomes for First Peoples and the entire community, to the benefit of us all.
The First Peoples’ Assembly is the official, elected voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Victoria. The First Peoples’ Assembly’s work builds on over 200 years of resistance against colonisation. The Assembly played a crucial role in negotiating the Statewide Treaty, and will work to empower local groups to negotiate their own localised treaties.
2026 is vitally important for Treaty because the Victorian opposition have committed to winding back Treaty if elected. In a state election year, it is vital that we hold up the work of the First Peoples’ Assembly as a shining example of the way forward.
Liberty Victoria will award the First Peoples’ Assembly at our annual Voltaire Human Rights Awards dinner on 6 November 2026 at the Sofitel Hotel in Naarm.
