Liberty Victoria President Gemma Cafarella has been quoted in relation to concerns that new laws intended to protect Australians from genuinely harmful material may risk stifling legitimate free speech.
“It appears that the only scrutiny will be via parliament disallowing regulations. Individual citizens will not have a right to challenge the decision to define things as harmful,” she said, calling for clear avenues for review and accountability over how the laws were applied.
